Cold storage of 'Tahiti' lime treated with 1-methylcyclopropene Scientia Agricola
Jomori,Maria Luiza Lye; Kluge,Ricardo Alfredo; Jacomino,Angelo Pedro.
The storage of 'Tahiti' limes under low temperatures enables the extension of the commercialization period. However the loss of the skin green color and the occurrence of chilling injuries prevent such advantage. The purpose of this work was to verify the efficiency of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), an inhibition of ethylene action, during the cold storage of 'Tahiti' lime. Fruits were treated for 12 hours with 1-methylcyclopropene at concentrations of 0 or 1.0 mL L-1 and then were stored at 5 or 10ºC for 30, 60 and 90 days of storage (+ 3 days of simulated marketing at 20ºC). Application of 1-MCP conserved the color of stored fruits at 10ºC during 30 days. Fruits treated with 1-MCP and stored at 5ºC presented less respiration than non-treated fruits. High...

Kluge,Ricardo Alfredo; Jomori,Maria Luiza Lye; Jacomino,Angelo Pedro; Vitti,Maria Carolina Dario; Vitti,Daniela Cristina Clemente.
Storage of 'Tahiti' limes (Citrus latifolia) at low temperature allows the marketing period to be extended. However, the loss of the green skin color and the occurrence of chilling injury (CI) prevent this extension. The purpose of this work was to verify the efficiency of intermittent warming (IW) in 'Tahiti' lime quality maintenance during cold storage. Fruit were submitted to IW (20ºC for 48 hours every 7 or 14 days or 38ºC for 24 hours every 14 days) during cold storage at 5ºC. Fruit were also stored at 5 and 10ºC continuously. The evaluations were carried out after 30 and 60 days of storage (+ 3 days of simulated marketing at 20ºC). CI occurrence on fruit was not verified after 30 days of storage. However, after 60 days of storage 60% of the fruit...

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of harvest at maturity on the composition, quality, and postharvest life of zapallito squash (Cucurbita maxima var. zapallito). Fruit were harvested at three developmental stages - small, medium, and large, with 30, 70, and 90±10-mm diameter, respectively - and were stored at 0 and 5°C for 26 days and, then, at 20°C for 2 days. The following parameters were determined: respiration, firmness, color, chlorophyll content, carotenoids, sugars, acidity, phenolic compounds, antioxidants, decay, mass loss, and chilling injury (CI). Small light-colored squashes were more prone to dehydration and decay. Delaying harvest markedly reduced fruit carotenoid contents, acidity, and respiration rate;...

Pre- and postharvest attributes of muskmelon cultivars for fresh-cut cubes Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Krarup,Christian; Jacob,Cristián; Contreras,Samuel.
The choice of the appropriate cultivar is a critical factor for obtaining a successful crop and for satisfying the needs of the industry and consumers. Nine commonly used or recently available varieties of cantaloupe melons (Cucumis melo L. Group Cantalupensis) were evaluated in two locations with the objective of selecting cultivars ad hoc for processing as fresh-cut cubes. Overall, the yield (30 to 45 t ha-1) and quality, including mainly the fruit size and soluble solids concentration (SSC), varied between locations, but the relative performance of cultivars was similar. The cultivars showed significant differences in attributes that are relevant for the industry and the consumer: color (from yellow to deep orange), SSC (from 8.7 to 14.7%), firmness...

Quality of pitaya fruit (Hylocereus undatus) as influenced by storage temperature and packaging Scientia Agricola
Freitas,Sérgio Tonetto de; Mitcham,Elizabeth Jeanne.
Pitaya (Hylocereus undatus) is an exotic non-climacteric fruit that reaches its best eating quality when harvested ripe, decreasing thereafter during storage. Our objectives were to determine the best combination of storage temperature and use of perforated plastic bags to maintain the postharvest quality of the fruit. Fruits were stored at 5, 7, or 10 ºC with and without a perforated plastic bag for 20 days, followed by five days at 20 ºC without the bag for shelf-life determination. Storage at 5 ºC, followed by 7 ºC maintained better visual appearance of the pitaya fruit after 20 days, by reducing decay incidence and severity, and maintaining greener bracts compared with fruit stored at 10 ºC. Pitaya fruit stored at 5 ºC without a perforated plastic bag...

Woolliness and leatheriness in late peach cultivars submitted to both delayed storage and to cold storage - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v35i3.13347 Agronomy
Neves, Leandro Camargo; Universidade Federal de Roraima; Campos, Andre José de; Universidade Federal de Roraima; Prill, Marcos André de Souza; Universidade Federal de Roraima; Roberto, Sérgio Ruffo; Universidade Estadual de Londrina.
The study was performed to identify the effect of delayed storage on the control of woolliness and leatheriness during cold storage of the late peach cultivars grown in Brazil. The fruits were harvested at the mature-green stage. All of the cultivars were exposed to temperatures of 20 ± 0.5ºC and 75 ± 3% of R.H. in a cold room for 0, 24, or 48 hours. Afterwards, the fruits were kept at 0 ± 0.5ºC and 92 ± 3% of R.H. for 28 days. The yellow pulp peaches, regardless of the length of delayed storage, did not present any symptoms of woolliness or leatheriness. The white pulp peaches not submitted to delayed storage developed either one or more of the other physiological disorders. Due to their lower level of pulp firmness, the control fruits of ‘Chimarrita’ and...
